Xanthium strumarium
![]() Common name: There are at least 4 of the species in Australia. Common names are Cockle burr and Noogoora burr.
This plant is a robust branched, woody annual herb growing to 2m tall. Its fruit is a hard woody burr with a hooked spine and 2 taller straight spines at the end. It's leaves are maple leaf-shaped and will often appear during a wet season.

![]() Much of NSW, Qld, central northern Vic, SA, WA, NT. Darling and Western Downs, Burnett region, Central Qld, northern NSW, Moreton region and north Qld.
