Common name: Willow

There are about 400 species of these deciduous trees and shrubs. They can grow in almost any climate and particularly in moist, heavy soil.  They love water and thrive in poorly drained areas.

 Distribution:

Black willow (Salix nigra)

This tree can be frequently seen in north eastern Victoria and several areas in New South Wales.

 

Crack willow (Salix fragilis var. fragilis) and Basket Willow (Salix x Rubens)

These 2 varieties are the most widespread willows in Australia. Quite a number grow in Tasmania and south-eastern Australia.
